Usually when you get a 504 error its related to DNS issues, a misconfigured firewall, or an issue with your server provider. If I were to guess, its a problem with your DNS records not updating in a timely manner. I haven't heard of anyone getting 504 errors yet, so there must be something specific to your set up. I hope you can work it out!
